post Bookcrossing in Edinburgh - the inside skinny

September 12th, 2005

Filed under: General, Books, News — Joe @ 12:03 am

The Edinburgh writer Deborah J Miller, author (under the name Miller Lau) of the excellent Last Clansman series (partly set in Edinburgh) celebrated the publication of her first novel with Tor Macmillan by going round the city recently and leaving copies of Swarmthief’s Dance (one of the SF book picks in the first issue of the FPI magazine) artfully arranged for complete strangers to find.

I know of some friends who have tried this phenomenon of bookcrossing before, where marked books are left in public places to share with others (see here for details on the bookcrossing website) but this is the first time I’ve heard of an author doing this with their own work - I thought it was a great way to promote new work and some readers get a free book too, so it can’t be bad! Debbie generously shared her literary excursion around Edinburgh and the emotional trials of sending your book out into the Big World on its own:

Here Be Dragonflies.

The karma of literature…

Well, it’s certainly a strange feeling, releasing your books into the great unknown … Book Crossing involves leaving books in public places for people to find, read and pass on. I have done it in the past with books from my own collection and have even been successful in getting a hit – that is, when someone records that they have ‘caught’ your book, in the wild.

Of course, not all books that Book Crossers release are recorded as caught, primarily because people who find the books either don’t want to post on the website or do not have Internet access. When a book you release IS caught, it’s a strange, vicarious thrill… similar to receiving a response to a message in a bottle.

And this frisson of uncertainty and excitement is doubly magnified when releasing your own work. I set out to release five copies of my new novel, “SWARMTHIEF’S DANCE†on the day of its publication. My friend Christine agreed to help with the task, and it was just as well she came along – I found myself strangely reluctant to let go of the first copy, as if abandoning some errant child into the wilderness. It seemed to exemplify what happens to all writers’ novels once they are published, sending them out into the world, to a completely unknown reception.

We set the books free in Edinburgh city centre, my home town, and a place that has featured in my earlier - Last Clansman - novels. The first copy was left on the Scott Monument and we sat there for about ten minutes while I warily eyed the passing people. What if he picks it up? Will he like it? What if he just tosses it in the trash?

Eventually, we had to make a move and, with a certain amount of cajoling from Christine, we wandered off along Princes Street Gardens with me glancing anxiously back every few paces.

After that it seemed easier. We took a picture at each location just to record the release. Rather cheekily, we left one in the leaflet stand at the Writer’s Museum – probably the only time I will be counted amongst the esteemed Edinburgh literati! (Naturally I disagree and consider Debbie a valued part of the UN City of Literature’s writing community - Joe)

The final copy, we left in the Entomology Department at Chamber Street Museum. The department is in the old Victorian section of the museum and, amongst these less glamorous areas that attract mainly scholars, there is a vaguely musty air. A couple of the lights illuminating the cases flicker on and off as the bulbs are dying.

Although I was slightly worried about creating a security alert, (but you could tell straight away it was a book, honest!) it seemed pertinent to leave a copy there, in such beautiful and slightly creepy company, as the novel is full of giant dragonflies.

I hope those who find the books take the time to read them, and hopefully, enjoy the story. I’ve been checking www.BookCrossing.com each day since we did the release but so far, nothing is been recorded as found. I don’t feel too badly about this, because sometimes a message in a bottle gets lost in the ocean and all we can do is wonder about its journey…

Deborah J. Miller, Edinburgh, September 2005

Of course, if anyone does come across a copy then please do go to the Bookcrossing site and register it and we’d love to hear from you here at the FPI blog too. And if you weren’t fortunate enough to pick up on of those copies, despair not for the excellent fantasy that is Swarmthief’s Dance is available in FPI store and from our online site now.

“The Quiet Calculation”

Writing by Ian on Thursday, 26 of January , 2006 at 10:33 pm

MuteMath - Stare At The Sun
MuteMath - Noticed
Album: MuteMath
Released on Teleprompt Records
MuteMath’s Website
MuteMath on Myspace

Here’s the Thursday night skinny:

“Mutemath, or Mute Math, or MuteMath (I can’t figure out how they want me to spell it). They’re like the Maroon 5 of indie-pop. I’ve heard they may even be a Christian band. If that was the case we’d have already posted 2 such bands here, which I find ironic. You may find it disorienting or downright unattractive–which is also reasonable. Regardless, the skinny is: they have a keytar player, they’re from N’awlins and they sound suspiciously like a glossier version of The Police. See for yourself lads and ladettes. I’m drinking scotch with honey in it because I can. Cheers.”

I must admit I listened to both tracks over the weekend and several times each, and I am not ashamed…and its not just because, I am southern, or christian, (I think people are calling anything wholesome christian nowadays.) Its because I liked the Police, and the similarity was very clear from the first time I heard each song.

I am glad to hear that more is coming soon, because that January calender is very spotty. February is short enough as is, so good luck fighting that sickness, with your work, and finding us some “hot new shit.”

Hurt the band? How does exposure hurt this band? I had never heard of them. Then, I listened to these two songs. I dug them. I noticed today that they are playing in Tampa on 3/4. I’m going to get tickets so I can see them live. Please explain how an up-and-coming band can be hurt by someone posting two songs and writing a positive review about them.

Eh. . .kind-of maybe a Christian band. Mute Math has risen from the ashes of the now defunct Christian group Earthsuit (only Mute Math’s guitarist is new to the scene). At one point, Mute Math was signed to Warner Records, but ultimately worked to get out of the deal because Warner wanted to market them under their Christian sublabel, Word Records. The lyrical meanings are ambiguous for a reason. Mute Math doesn’t want to be pigeon-holed as a Christian band.

In regards to being pigeonholed, lead singer Paul Meaney had this to say, “I hate pigeons, because they shit on everything. So if a pigeonhole has anything to do with that, I’ll try to stay clear.”

Christian? Maybe. . .if you want them to be. It certainly helps to understand the lyrics if you look at them from that perspective. If not, you’ll still have no problem enjoying these guys.

Thanks for posting about them.

Mutemath is a Band howm ive listened to since the demize of earthsuit and if a band will not accept terms set by a record company that wil hinder the sound and artisticvalue of the music i agree dont label me that way i really do not like pigeons but what i understand is that paul meany doesnt want to just stop at reaching the christian audience but also the secular I think the world specially the mtv and vh1 world need a little subliminar messages again but this time not satanic like in the past from other bands of which i will not name but they need God in a more simple and non judmental way. of course if you sin you will go to hell but salvation doesnt have to be pushed on to everyone like some sublabels like word at times with out knowing does. i love mutemath and ive had the chance to see them 3 times allready since the creation of the band and i folowed paul ever since earthsuit ive met him and discussed this thing with him.

A little bit of Gossip

Kinda funny looking skin!

by Christina Jones on January 26th, 2006

Skinema.com

While researching a post for Pittwatch, I ran across a website that really is quite funny and educational as well.  Dr. Vail Reese has a site called Skinema.com, which has a lot of valuable skin care information cloaked in some quite creative humor.  From the site:

As a dermatologist and a film buff, I present a series of skin conditions featured in movies. Peruse at your leisure and let me know what you think. You may look at movies in a new way. Disclaimer: None of the individuals featured on the site are patients. The images are publicity photos (not clinical photos taken in a medical office). Actors seen with skin conditions include some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

If you will go spend a little time there, you will find a ton of useful information and get a few chuckles as well.  Dr. Reese’s site appears to have been around for awhile, and I am sorry I have never found it til now!  Have fun!

Website Launch

The new design of AnthonyDeloso.com is finished and live as of today. I will be working to iron out the wrinkles over the next few days, so if you find any bugs in the new design please let me know. I will be posting articles regularly about branding, small business, career management, and design. So, head over to check it out in its infancy.

P.S. That is one of the reasons I have been so dormant on TheSkinny. However, no need to worry… I will be back to posting regularly very soon.

A Friendly Reminder to People Commenting

Hey everyone, there is an important issue that I need to address on this website.

Lately, there have been some people in the comments section who leave nasty, rude comments directed at other people who leave comments. The reason they are nasty is because apparently, they don’t agree with what the other person(s) is/are saying.

I’m referring to the people saying things like “Oh, you must be pro-ana because so-and-so is so skinny and you don’t think she is!” and “You are a f*cked up w**re, go rot in h*ll for thinking so-and-so is too skinny/fat”.

Now, while arguing and debating in the comments section is fine and even encouraged, stuff like the comment examples I gave above is inappropriate. Since when are we (as people) not allowed to have difference of opinion? Since when is someone “pro-ana” just because they prefer to see a skinny/thin/slender person as opposed to someone bigger? Since when should someone rot in hell because they have a different opinion than you?? This world would be a super-boring place if everyone agreed and had the same preferences! Would it not?

I understand that a lot of people have eating disorders in this world. Yes, it is a serious problem. However, just because a person wants to be thin or prefers to see slim celebrities doesn’t mean they have an eating disorder. Take me, for example: I prefer to be slender and in shape. I prefer to see celebrities work hard to be in excellent shape. That is just MY opinion. It doesn’t mean I’m a terrible person or encourage eating disorders. At all. It’s just a preference! And I completely respect people who prefer the opposite.

So all I’m asking is for you, the people commenting, to respect other people’s opinions. Feel free to argue with them. Just don’t bash them personally and accuse them of having an ED or being pro-ed for their opinions.

That’s all I ask… thanks for reading!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Christmas tree

Firstly, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. I will be closing until December 26th 2006 because of my incapability to shop for people at an earlier time in my life. Also, I doubt you would rather read celebrity gossip as opposed to tearing open presents feeling happy about giving presents.

In much other important news, my birthday is also on December 25th. Why people decided to make my birthday a national holiday is beyond me, but I’m pretty sure I’m that important. Anyway, I hope everyone has a great holiday!

If you need a Gossip Fix…

Also, at this time, I would Love to Thank My Sponsors.
